Ningbo’s Moon Lake

Ningbo’s Moon Lake

Moon Lake is a a blissful way to idle away some spare time. It’s equipped with the unique blend of drabness and subtle beauty that characterizes many charming sites in China. Walking around the extensive lakefront, seeing a Tai Chi practitioner here and there, and taking in the lake is a perfect way to unwind. There’s even a dance hall to burn off your friskier energy if so inclined. And no, it isn’t the particular kind of dancing where middle-aged ladies dance solo to My Humps/ traditional music for a workout. It’s mainly the graceful pair dancing of older couples.

While strolling, you might see some older men sitting at the park tables playing cards or GO while the younger generation taps away at their cell phones.. Dingy paddleboats are also available for a fee if you want to get up close and personal with the water.

A few free shrines line the border of the lake if you hankering for the taste of a temple on an undersized scale. Surprisingly, just across from the lake’s border are a couple of stores selling the latest video games and consoles. If you want to buy some video games locally these  stores will be one of your better options around here.

On the downside, Moon Lake lacks the interesting sculptures that add character to many Chinese parks. You have to go somewhere else in Ningbo for statuary. Nonetheless, Moon Lake is a great way to wind down your day and feel the ambient peace traditional sites try to cultivate.

Pros: Atmospheric, Relaxing

Cons: There could be just a little more to see, like sculptures.

Address: 宁波市海曙区偃月街
